Improving Creativtiy
We maybe be creatives and artists but that doesn’t mean we always feel creative. For the longest time I didn’t think I was a creative person but I just didn’t know how to tap into it. I believe everyone can be creative in their own way. Once I started doing photography I realized somedays I was super creative and the ideas were flowing but why did some days felt like I had nothing to give. I decided to put together a list of things that helped improve my creativity and made me a better photographer.
One Cycles of Creativity
Creativity eps and flows! This was key for me to remember. It took the pressure off of me to be at my best all the time. No one is at the top of their game 24/7. I also noticed that my creativity flows with my menstrual cycle. Just as the menstrual cycle follows the moon cycle, you will not always be at your biggest and brightest everyday and thats ok!

Two Embrace Boredom
Learn to be bored. When your always on the go you may feel like your creativity has left. Creativity isn’t something you can force into your busy schedule. Thats not how it works. If your in a slump try just sitting with your thoughts. Maybe going for a walk or a drive without your phone. You will be amazed at what ideas will blossom when you take the time for them.
Three Avoid Perfectionism
Perfectionism. It can be good at times. It can push you but it’s when you need to have everything perfect and in order is when it hurts you. Creativity is like a living breathing thing. You can’t control it. All you can do is give it a space to live and breath and it will help you create some of the most amazing art.
Four Don’t Compare
Comparison. They say comparison is a thief a joy and thats true but i would also say it robs you of your creativity. I remember a time when I followed many photographers on Instagram and would constantly look at all these different photos and styles. I would wish that I was just as good. When In realty I just wasn’t there yet on my journey. When I was so obsessed with comparing myself to others, I didn’t give myself the space to focus on my art.
Five The Arts
Last but not least immerse yourself into the arts. I remember in college I was in a Art History class where we learned about the Renaissance. That’s when I feel in love with Renaissance paintings and statues. I didn’t know why but something about it just spoke to me. There really is some truth in the saying “knowledge is power.” I really believe the more art you rub shoulders you become a better artist. I’m not saying to compare and copy but to admire the greats and find art that really speaks to your soul. Find art that fills you with the fire of creativity, whatever that may be. For some it may be music, sculptures, movies or paintings. Go explore and learn from the greats and why their art was so great.
